Course Overview
Close Quarters Battle is one of the most demanding and most misunderstood disciplines in defensive shooting. The distances are short, the decisions are fast, and the margin for error is almost zero. CQB1 — Introduction to Close Quarters Battle is your entry point into this world — and it starts exactly where it should: with the fundamentals of movement, angles, and decision making that keep you alive in a confined space.
This course is conducted entirely with training weapons provided by Eastern Front Defense Academy. No live ammunition is used. This is not a limitation — it is by design. CQB skills are built through repetition of movement, not volume of rounds. Using training weapons allows you to make mistakes, get corrected, and repeat the right technique safely and efficiently in a way that live fire simply cannot replicate.
You will learn how buildings and confined spaces work against you, how to use angles to your advantage, how to move and clear as a solo operator and as a two man team, and how to apply your pistol and rifle in the close range environment they were built for. Whether you are thinking about home defense, personal protection, or simply want to understand how professionals clear a structure — CQB1 gives you the foundation everything else is built on.
What You'll Learn
Detailed learning objectives for CQB1
by the end of this course, students will be able to:
Explain the principles of CQB and why confined spaces change everything about defensive shooting
Identify and avoid the fatal funnel in any doorway or hallway
Apply the slice the pie technique to clear angles before entering a space
Execute a basic room entry as a solo operator
Execute a basic two man room entry with a partner
Demonstrate proper shooting from retention at contact distances
Apply close range shooting techniques with both pistol and rifle
Make basic shoot/no-shoot decisions in confined space scenarios
What You'll Practice
Hands-on drills and exercises in this course
CQB Principles & The Fatal Funnel
Before you move a single step we make sure you understand why CQB is different from everything else you have trained for. You'll learn what the fatal funnel is, why doorways are the most dangerous places in any structure, and how the geometry of a confined space works against you — and how to use it in your favor.
Slicing the Pie
One of the most fundamental and most important techniques in CQB. You'll learn to use lateral movement to incrementally expose and clear angles before committing to an entry — seeing the threat before the threat sees all of you. You'll drill it with both pistol and rifle training weapons until the movement starts to feel instinctive.
Solo Room Entry
You will learn the complete solo entry sequence — stack, slice, enter, clear, and assess. Solo CQB is demanding and has real limitations, and understanding both what you can do alone and what you cannot is one of the most valuable things this course will give you.
Two Man Room Entry
Two operators change everything in CQB. You'll learn the roles, the signals, the entry sequences, and the muzzle discipline that keeps both partners safe. You'll rotate through both the number one and number two positions so you understand the responsibility and the perspective of each role.
Shooting From Retention
At contact distance a fully extended firearm is a firearm a threat can grab. You'll learn the retention shooting position for both pistol and rifle — keeping your weapon under your control while still being able to deliver effective fire at the closest possible range. This skill is non-negotiable in CQB.
Shoot / No-Shoot Decision Making
CQB compresses your decision-making time to almost nothing. You'll work through scenarios where you must identify a threat, issue verbal commands, and decide whether to engage, hold, or withdraw — under the pressure of a confined space and an unknown situation. This is where the mental side of CQB is trained.
Full Scenario Integration
The course ends with complete CQB scenarios — solo and two man — where everything you learned gets applied in a realistic, dynamic context. Your movement, your angles, your weapon handling, and your decision making are all evaluated together. This is the most valuable training block in the course.
